Eyelash Extension Primer & Bonder: What They Are, How to Use Them, and Why They Matter
Eyelash Extension Primer
What It Is
Eyelash extension primer is a liquid solution designed to cleanse and prep the natural lashes before extension application. Think of it as the first step in creating a clean, adhesive-friendly surface.
How It Works
Primer removes any leftover oils, dirt, and microscopic debris that regular lash shampoo might miss. It also helps balance the pH of the natural lashes, which ensures better bonding conditions for the adhesive. A well-prepped lash line means the glue can cure more effectively — resulting in stronger, longer-lasting retention.
How to Use It
-
Cleanse the Lashes First: Always begin with a lash-safe cleanser or shampoo.
-
Apply Primer Sparingly:
-
Use a microbrush or lint-free applicator.
-
Apply a small amount to the base of the natural lashes — not the skin.
-
Avoid soaking the lashes; too much primer can make lashes slippery and counterproductive.
-
-
Let It Dry: Allow a few seconds for the primer to fully evaporate before beginning the lash application.
Who to Use It On
-
Clients with oily skin or lashes prone to makeup buildup.
-
Clients with poor lash retention history.
-
Ideal for anyone who wears mascara or heavy eye makeup frequently.
Pro Tip: If your client has very dry or brittle lashes, skip primer or choose a moisturizing formula — over-drying can lead to breakage.
Eyelash Extension Bonder
What It Is
Bonder is a liquid solution applied after the lash extensions are complete. Its main job is to instantly cure (polymerize) the adhesive from the outside in, locking in the bond and reducing fumes.
How It Works
When you apply bonder, it reacts with the adhesive’s cyanoacrylate, quickly sealing the bond. This reduces adhesive fumes and makes the lash line more flexible. The result?
-
Less irritation: Great for clients with sensitive eyes.
-
Better retention: Because the adhesive is sealed, it’s less likely to break down from humidity or oils.
-
Immediate freedom: Clients can get their lashes wet sooner — no need to wait 24 hours.
How to Use It
-
Finish the Set: Wait 2–3 minutes after placing the last extension.
-
Apply Bonder:
-
Use a microbrush or disposable applicator.
-
Dab a tiny amount along the adhesive bonding points (never saturate the lashes).
-
-
Allow to Set: No rinsing needed — your client is ready to go.
Primer vs. Bonder: Do You Need Both?
Yes — they serve different purposes!
-
Primer is about preparation (clean, optimal surface).
-
Bonder is about finishing (sealing and curing the bond).
Using both in your lash routine can significantly improve retention, client comfort, and the overall quality of your work.
